Having a dyno facility at my disposal has prompted me
into looking at the various fuel injection systems that are now available for
the flat four. British manufacturers have been at the forefront of this
technology for years, so surely it makes sense to take advantage of the
technology on our doorstep. Although a well dialled in set of carburettors on a
mild street engine is hard to beat, the more radical the state of tune of your
engine, the more you have to gain from fitting a programmable fuel injection
system. Until now, fear of the unknown and additional cost have prevented more
people from exploring this route but with carburettors becoming scarce and
expensive, the injection route is looking increasingly attractive. The heart of
the system (the ECU), is made by DTA. More in depth information on this subject
appears in the JMR Performance Guide, but briefly, I have sourced a complete
engine management system which allows mapping of both fuel and ignition. When
mapped properly, an engine equipped with full management will produce more
torque throughout the rpm range than is possible with carburettors and a
conventional ignition system.
A
computerised Engine Management System will transform the performance of your VW
engine. The system I offer is a complete engine management system: it controls
both ignition timing and fuel supply. With the system fitted to your engine and
hooked up to a computer whilst holding the engine at various load sites and rpm
settings on the dyno, I can maximise torque and horsepower by adjusting
ignition timing and the amount of fuel injected.
Some of the
features of the JMR Engine Management Kit for the VW air cooled engine:
Accelerator pump
effect - Air temperature compensation - Oil temperature compensation - Inlet
Pressure compensation - Soft cut and hard cut rev limiters and shift light
settings - Data Logging - Diagnostics Display - Traction control
